Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Top8 other Players who Could be Playing their last World Cup this year


The 2022 World Cup which is set to be played in Qatar is currently fast approaching. 

The competition, which is the most prestigious international competition in the world, will kick off in November and will end in December. 

The biggest names in football are expected to play their role in seeing that their various countries go far in the competition. Some may be bidding on winning the trophy, but that's not an easy task.

However, despite world-class players set to appear in this year's World Cup, they may have retired when next the competition will be played. Top stars like Messi and Ronaldo both made their World Cup debut in 2006, and this will be their sixth World Cup appearance. 

Having known these, here are the top ten stars who could retire before the next World Cup competition.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward made his World Cup debut in 2006. Ronaldo is currently 37 and may retire before 2026.

2. Lionel Messi. Messi also had his debut in the 2006 World Cup. He is currently 35 and must have retired before the next World Cup.

3. Robert Lewandowski. He made his World Cup debut in Russia in 2018, and he's currently 34. Lewandowski will be 38 in 2026.

4. Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan made his World Cup debut in South Africa in 2010. Suarez is 35 and must have retired before 2026.

5. Luka Modric. Modric is 37 and must have retired before 2026.

6. Manuel Neuer. The German shot-stopper is currently 36, although goalkeepers don't retire early, he will be 40 in 2026, and goalkeepers like Ter Stegen or Trap must have taken over.


7. Thomas Muller. Muller is currently 33 years and will be 37 in 2026.

8. Dani Alves. Alves is the oldest on the list. He's currently 39 years of age and will be 43 in 2026.

9. Thiago Silva. The Chelsea defensive wall is currently 37 years of age and will be 41 when next the World Cup will be played.

10. Jordi Alba. The Spanish left-back made his World Cup debut in 2014. He will be 36 years of age in 2026 and must have retired.
